Messy Bun Crochet hat

If you have never made a messy bun/ponytail hat, give it a try.  There are fewer rows to be made than for the regular beanie hat which is a bit slouchy.  Also, if you haven’t yet mastered the magic ring, good news, you don’t have to make one in this pattern. 
Working around a hair elastic is easier than you might imagine if you haven’t tried it yet.  Give it a try.

Materials:


worsted weight yarn

1 skein of caron simply soft
or look for the 4 on the label of your yarn


crochet hook size 6.5



a hair elastic
Stitches:
mc = magic circle

ss = slip stitch; insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull through the loop.

dc = double crochet; yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (you have 3 on your hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops.

fpdc = front post double crochet; yarn over, go around the post from the front, yarn over and pull up a loop, (you have 3 on your hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops.


bpdc = back post double crochet; yarn over, go around the post from the back, yarn over and pull up a loop, (you have 3 on your hook), yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops.

 





finished size = 6 x 8.5 inches
gauge: 
12 dc = 4 inches
11 rows = 4 inches


we are crocheting around the hair elastic.

Round 1: make a slip knot, attach the yarn to the hair elastic and chain 3 (counts as first dc) make 42 dc around the hair elastic, ss into the top of the first chain 3
