I’ve been enjoying going for walks all summer with my daughters. One day, on our adventures, we stopped at a local ice cream store.
Don’t judge me!
I bought a water bottle at the store and it was hugely marked up in price. Trying to be thrifty,
I decided that I would carry my water with me rather than paying too much for water. So I woke up the next morning and made a water bottle holder. It was just all single crochet. I was able to carry it with me on my afternoon walk that day, so I decided that I would make some more water bottle holders for my family and friends for hikes and zoo trips. As I find single crochet rather tedious at times, I came up with something that would be a bit faster than all single crochet but would have the same sturdiness as my first water bottle holder. It works up very quickly and is only tedious when you get to the strap section.

Traveler’s Water Bottle Holder with reinforced base
Materials:
(Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Cone Yarn in Key Lime pie Ombre Pictured)
Yarn needle and scissors
Gauge = 1 inch = 5 hdc
1 inch = 3 rows.
Stitches:
Mc = magic circle
Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = single crochet
Blosc = back loop only single crochet
Dc = double crochet
We are making 2 circles for the bottom of the water bottle holder to make a very sturdy structure.
First Circle
mc
Round 1: hdc x 8
Round 2: hdc x 2 in each stitch around (16)
Round 3: hdc x 2, hdc, hdc x 2, hdc, repeat (24)
Round 4: hdc x 2, hdc, hdc, hdc x 2, hdc, hdc, repeat around(32)
Round 5: hdc x 2, hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc x 2, hdc, hdc, hdc repeat around (40)
Diameter of circle at this point is 3 inches
Gauge = 1 inch = 5 hdc
1 inch = 3 rows.
If your circle does NOT measure 3 inches then change the size of your hook and try again.
Tie off and weave in ends
Make a second circle exactly like the first circle. (repeat from mc to round 5)
Round 6: attach first circle to current circle
and single crochet them together in all of the stitches. (40 )
Round 7: sc back loop only in all stitches around (40 )
Round 8: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 9: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 10: ch 2, dc, ch 1, skip 1, dc, dc, ch 1, skip 1, dc, dc, around. (40 )
Round 11: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 12: repeat round 10
Round 13: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 14: repeat round 10
Round 15: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 16: repeat round 10
Round 17: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 18 repeat round 10
Round 19: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 20: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 21: sc in all stitches around (40)
Round 22 sc in first five stitches (this is the beginning of the strap)
Round 23 ch 1 and turn sc in all (5)
Repeat Round 23 until you have the length that you want.
My strap measured 56 inches.
When you have the length that you want, find the place on the opposite side of the bag where you want to attach your strap.
use stitch markers to find where
you want the end of the strap to attach.
make sure that your strap is not twisted
Single crochet the strap to the
opposite side of the bag.
You’ll want to crochet on the inside of the bag.
cut a long tail and sew the ends over the
single crochet to completely enforce that side of the bag.
you can add whatever embellishments you want
Attach a label or an applique to the side or leave it plain.
If you would rather make a short strap like a wrist strap, you can just single crochet the strap back to itself rather than the opposite side.
This can be used on a wrist or on a carabiner
