Crochet for Kids: Let’s DIY some bracelets! photo tutorial

Many schools are out these next couple of weeks.  So, I encourage you to teach your kids how to crochet.  It might help to keep their hands occupied with something other than their phone or tablet.  And crocheting or knitting are good life skills to have.  There are so many things that can be made with crochet.  If your child already knows how to crochet, I encourage you to give them a project to make during these next few weeks.  Tell them it will help you out.  Whether that project is something for you or something for them.  They could make you a dishcloth or a hotpad or scrubby.  Or make something for themselves like a scrunchie or a blanket for their 18 inch dolls.  Also, boys can be encouraged to crochet.  There is an MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter who crochets called the crochet boss.  My grandfather taught me how to finger chain when I was 8 and my grandmother tells me that one of her brother’s crocheted beautiful doilies.   If you think of any projects for boys, post them in the comments sections or send me an email.  The first project that I’m posting for kids today is Bracelets.

If your kids are very young, just teaching them to chain is good.  Chaining with your fingers is good practice.

Finger Chaining!

First make a slip knot

Lay the yarn on a table (flat surface – the floor is fine too)
Make a loop with the tail  over the working yarn.
tail and working yarn
put the loop over the working yarn
Put your finger on the tail.
Pull up the working yarn through the loop while holding down the tail.  You now have a slip knot!
Put the loop over the working yarn again.
Put your fingers inside the loop and pull the working yarn UP through the loop.  Hold down the tail with your other hand.  You’ve made your first chain!
Keep going.  Use your fingers to pull that working yarn through the loop.  When your loop gets too big, you can pull on the working yarn (the side that is attached to the yarn) and watch as your loop gets smaller and smaller…  How many chains can you make?

Once you get the hang of making chains and you learn to use a hook (sorry i didn’t make a tutorial for that today)
You can make the first bracelet!

 Chain Bracelet

Make a couple of chains of 10 chains each with longer ends and then tie those chains together and tie it onto your wrist.  (or get someone to help you tie it on)

Make at least 2.  you can make more of these if you want and then tie the ends together

Single Crochet Bracelet

Use worsted weight yarn (look for the 4 on the label)
Hook size 5.00mm (if you chain very tightly go up a size to a 5.5mm hook)
Stitches:  single crochet – put your hook into the stitch and then Yarn over and pull through, now you have 2 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through both.

Ch 25 (or 23 if your wrist is very small)
Row 1: skip the first chain and single crochet in the next chain and in every chain across (24- go back and count to make sure that you have 24 in this first row)  (22 single crochets if you are making the smaller bracelet)
Chain 1 and turn your work

Row 2: Skip that first chain 1 and make your first single crochet in the first stitch and then single crochet across(24) ((22))( try to count as you are making your single crochets or check them afterwards.)

Chain 1 and turn

Row 3: single crochet in all stitches across just like the previous rows (24) ((22))
at the end, chain 4 and connect to the first stitch on that end.  This will serve as a little buttonhole.
tie off and sew in the ends.  (I usually tie off by making a chain 1 and then cut the working yarn and pull that loop out)
Sew a button on the end of the bracelet.

This pattern in simple crochet abbreviations.
Ch 26
Row 1: Sc in all across, ch 1 and turn
Row 2:  sc in all across ch 1 and turn
Row 3:  sc in all across, ch 4 and attach to start for buttonhole.

Chain 4

put your hook into the first row
Slip stitch into that first row to make a buttonhole

A slip stitch is similar to a single crochet – put your hook into the stitch, yarn over and then pull right through the stitch and the loop on your hook!

Tie off and sew in the ends with a yarn needle.
sew on a button!

If you want to make a bracelet for your mom or dad or grandma, make a chain that you think will fit their wrist and then ask them to try that chain around their wrist, if it’s just right, chain 3 more!  and make your bracelet the same way.  Each row will be 1 less stitch than your starting chain.  Just keep track of how many stitches you should have.

My daughter made this blue one for me
